Govt to Auction Next Generation 3G/4G Spectrum

The Industry and telecom sector has witnessed an exponential growth in the past few years after two rounds of 3G/4G spectrum auctions.

There is remarkable increase in the number of subscribers of mobile internet users in telecom sector. The high speed internet density today is surpassing 27%.

As planned earlier government is considering to auction the last available spectrum of 10MHz in 1800MHz. This is the last available spectrum block from the initially allocated spectrum in 2014.

For the said purpose, an Advisory Committee is constituted headed by MoS IT & Telecom, while Special Assistants to PM for Law, Secretary IT, Secretary Finance, Secretary Law, Chairman PTA, ED FAB. Member telecom is also part of this committee as “Committee Secretary”.

This advisory committee is mandated to determine the base price of spectrum and propose a policy directive for the purpose.

Ufone has one last chance?

It is highly unlikely that any new player would enter the market. Ideally, Ufone should go for this spectrum, as it is the only telecom company in Pakistan not equipped with 4G services. However current license holders could also use it to enhance their spectrum capacity.
