China’s Tencent buys Clash of Clans Game Maker

Today the internet giant of China, Tencent has announced to buy a majority stake in Supercell for roughly $8.6 billion. Tencent will get 84.3 percent stake in Supercell while the rest belongs to game studio employees. This sale makes it world’s biggest ever gaming deal in the history.

Supercell, based in Finland is best known for its war strategy video game ─ Clash of the Clans. In this game users from around the world battle each other, destroying villages and looting gold.

The game was initially released in August 2012 and since its release it booked a permanent spot at the top 5 grossing apps on Android and iOS.

More than 100 million people daily play top four games from Supercell, including Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Boom Beach and Hay Day.

This deal enables us to keep Supercell privately held. That is a better match with our small size and unique culture than being a public company where our concern would be the pressure from financial markets to think short term.

The total equity value of $10.2 billion dollars also recognizes the value of the phenomenal company that our people have built.

Ilkka Paananen, CEO Supercell

This deal will benefit both the companies, allowing Supercell to penetrate in Chinese gaming market and allowing Tencent to expand in global markets.
