PEMRA Asks Broadcasters to Stop Airing Vulgar Ads of OPPO & Zong

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has asked the broadcasters association to stop airing indecent ads of smartphone company OPPO and the telecom operator Zong.

PEMRA said, it has received numerous complaints against these advertisements, as they’re offensive and distasteful for Pakistani audience.

Furthermore these TVCs doesn’t match with the norms and culture of Pakistan, that is why the viewers have complained.

Make Changes or PEMRA will Ban Them:

PEMRA has asked the broadcasters to make changes in these advertisements till Monday Feb 20.

Strict action will be taken under the section 27 of PEMRA Ordinance 2002 if broadcasters continue airing these commercials. PEMRA could also ban these ads in Pakistan and impose other penalties.

What’s Wrong with these TVCs?

One of Zong’s recent TVCs, shows men and women dancing in a night clubs. While apparently “being high” on Zong’s high speed internet.

Another one is focused on the theme “love” that shows a mixed gathering doing fun activities, while a girl hits the sensitive part of a young man’s body.

OPPO’s problem is that it always duplicate India’s content. That is the reason some people think of it as an Indian smartphone brand instead of Chinese.

After OPPO’s contract ended with Indian actors Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor the company started airing a new ad. It shows several girls including the infamous Amy Jackson doing acrobatics while wearing in-appropriate dresses.

Surely a segment of Pakistani population will not have any issues with these commercials but the majority of people doesn’t like these bold TVCs.

Our Advice for Brands:

The Pakistani culture and country’s religion doesn’t allow vulgarity, so the brands should be really careful about their marketing campaigns.

They can create a temporary buzz by showing bold, in-appropriate ads but it does affect the brand image in the long run. Moreover, PEMRA is also quite active these days, so their ads could be banned altogether causing huge financial loss.
