Google Play Store Turns 5 Today with a Billion Active Users

I remember when I got my first Android phone, it came with Android Market; a pretty basic version of today’s Play Store. It was re-branded in 2012 to include apps, games, movies, TV shows, music and books.

Today, Google is celebrating the 5th birthday of Play Store and in just 5 years it managed to get more than 1 billion active users in 190 countries.

The open nature of Android does allow side-loading applications, you can just download the apks and install them on your phone, but Play Store has become the main requirement for most of Android users.

To mark the occasion Google has published a list of its top 5 downloads in various categories from the Play Store. How many of these apps and games you have also downloaded? share in comments section below.
