Huawei Refreshes the Nova Series with Nova 2 and 2 Plus

Last year at the IFA, Huawei introduced a new product line dubbed as “Nova”. These smartphones combined the features of the premium P-series and the budget Honor devices, while keeping the prices in the mid-range segment.

One of the two devices, Nova Plus was also launched in Pakistan for the price of Rs. 41,000 – however, for various reasons the Nova lineup didn’t get much success.

The most obvious reason could be the price to specifications ratio. The Honor sub-brand is already providing great hardware at the prices consumers love. So, Nova itself is in competition with Honor, resulting in poor sales, not only in Pakistan but other markets as well.

Nova 2 and 2 Plus:

Now after almost 9 months, Huawei has refreshed the Nova lineup, by announcing Nova 2 and Nova 2 Plus. Both of these devices are packing Dual-Cameras on the back and surprisingly a 20-Megapixel selfie camera on the front.

In terms of design layout, the new phones appear to be an amalgamation of the Honor 8 and P10 as they feature a metallic design, quite similar to the flagship P10 but with some elements plucked from the Honor 8.

Nova 2 has a 5-inch LPTS display and Nova 2 Plus features a 5.5-inch LPTS display. Both of these have 1080p resolution and the screen is covered by a 2.5D curved gorilla glass.

On the inside, Nova 2 features a combo of Kirin 659 chipset (octa-core processor + Mali T830 MP2 GPU) with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage, whereas the Plus version keeps the same SoC and RAM but comes with 128GB storage.

The camera combination on the back features a 12+8 Megapixel cameras with f/1.8 aperture, phase detection auto-focus and a single LED flash. This seems a nice setup but unfortunately it can’t record 4K video.

Nova 2 features a 2950mAh battery and the Plus version comes with a bigger 3340mAh battery – both of these support Fast battery charging.

In terms of connectivity these phones are 4G LTE ready, have a fingerprint scanner on the back and comes with a type-C connector. The operating system running out of the box is Android Nougat 7.0 with Huawei’s own EMUI 5.1 on top of it.

Pricing and Availability:

These phones will be available in China on June 16, With prices around Rs. 38,000 and 44,000. Seeing the response of Nova Plus last year we are not so sure if Huawei has any plans to launch these phones in the Pakistan market – but we will keep you updated.
