In a strategic move that highlights the growing intersection of mobile technology and the automotive industry, OPPO has signed a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen Group. The deal grants Volkswagen access to OPPO’s portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including 5G technologies, aimed at enhancing connectivity in its next-generation vehicles.

This marks OPPO’s first bilateral licensing agreement with a connected-car manufacturer and signals the company’s ambition to extend its technological footprint beyond smartphones and into the rapidly evolving automotive sector.

The agreement will enable Volkswagen to integrate OPPO’s cellular innovations into its connected vehicle platforms across global markets. As vehicles become increasingly software-defined, mobile technologies like 5G are key to enabling real-time data exchange, enhanced navigation, infotainment, and autonomous driving capabilities.

OPPO, ranked eighth globally in 5G patent strength according to IP analytics firm LexisNexis® IPlytics (as of January 2025), has steadily built one of the most robust patent portfolios in the telecom space. By March 2025, the company had filed over 113,000 patent applications and secured more than 62,000 granted patents worldwide.

Beyond 5G, OPPO continues to invest in next-gen technology areas such as 6G, artificial intelligence, charging solutions, imaging, and video. This Volkswagen deal not only reinforces OPPO’s IP licensing strategy but also highlights the increasing relevance of mobile innovators in shaping the future of connected mobility.
