Egypt’s military spokesman told that naval forces have captured three scuba divers who were trying to sabotage an undersea Internet cable in the Mediterranean.
It was told on the official Facebook page Egyptian Armed Forces that divers were arrested while “cutting the undersea cable”, The statement said they were on a boat. It did not further have details on who they were.
Earlier it was told that Internet services in Pakistan, India, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt were disrupted due the damage taken by SEA-ME-WE-4 cable caused by a ship. The cable is approximately 18,800 kilometers long, and provides the primary Internet backbone between South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Europe.
Incidents of undersea cable damage are becoming a routine, that affects millions of Internet users across the globe, the authorities concerned should take concrete measures to prevent these incidents.
