A recent report from Evans Data survey tells us that there are now more than 12 million developers currently working on mobile application. These include the ones working on backend, machine learning, design and other elements related to mobile development.

Total population of developers worldwide sits around 21 million, so it means that more than half of these developers are now targeting mobile applications.

12 million developers

The study shows the APAC region is the fastest growing region for developers. Evans Data projects that the expanding number of developers will keep APAC’s developer population the highest globally for the next several years.

Android Takes the Lead

Out of 12 million developers who are targeting mobile, around 5.9 million take Android as the priority while 2.8 million go for iOS first. Most developers target multiple mobile platforms, so secondary platform targets differ and often include competing platforms.

If things continue to stay the course, the Evans Data report believes the number of mobile app developers will increase from 12 million to 14 million in the next four years.

This number is not enough, we need more developers

Mobile development doesn’t only include smartphones and tablets, with the addition of wearables the family just got bigger. Today an estimated two-thirds of all digital media time spent is on mobile devices, so developers need to start thinking mobile first; 12 million isn’t enough we need all of them.
