Usually when Pakistan or its citizens come under the spotlight by international media, it’s for all the wrong reasons. But today it is different as Google honors the “Angel of Mercy”, Late Abdul Sattar Edhi through its doodle.

This doodle visible to Googlers in Pakistan, USA, Europe, Australia and Japan celebrates the birthday Abdul Sattar Edhi, who is recognized as a global-reaching philanthropist and humanitarian.
Ehdi’s Life Story:

Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in British Gujrat and moved to Karachi after the independence. He soon noticed that many Pakistanis lacked shelter, medicine, education, and other essentials, and was moved to help in any way he could.

In 1951, he established the Edhi foundation, which is funded solely by private donations. The foundation, which operates 24 hours a day, provides a variety of social services from homeless shelters to medical care, all free of charge. Most notably, the foundation operates the world’s largest volunteer ambulance network in Pakistan.

Edhi was directly involved with the foundation throughout the rest of his life. He always focused more on those around him than on his own comfort or needs. In fact, he and his family slept in a room near the foundation’s headquarters and had only a few belongings.

His efforts were not limited Pakistan as he extended support to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the 1985 famine in Ethiopia. He was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, but unfortunately his noble deeds were not enough to move the The Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Edhi Died but his Mission Lives:

Edhi died last year in Karachi of renal failure. He was offered treatment abroad, but insisted on being treated in a government hospital at Karachi. He died but his mission still lives, as Pakistanis it is our utmost responsibility to care for our fellow citizens and donate to charitable organizations like Edhi Foundation as much as we can.
