Dubai Gets World’s First Robocop Patrolling Its Streets

You may have seen the 1987 science fiction movie “Robocop” or its reboot, in which robots and cyborgs are shown patrolling the streets of Detroit in not so distant future.

It seems like that future is already here, as Dubai police gets the world’s first operational robot policeman. This Robocop made its debut at the Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (GISEC) and will start patrolling the streets of Dubai, tonight.

World’s First Robot Policeman:

The autonomous Robocop, stands 170 centimeters tall and weighing 100 kilograms. It features an emotion detector which can recognize gestures and hand signals from up to 1.5 meters away. It rolls around on wheels and can speak many languages without breaking a sweat.

The Robocop can also detect a person’s emotions and facial expressions. It checks if the individual is happy, sad, or smiling and has the ability to change his expression and greetings to put people at ease.

Khaleej Times reports that this robot is not exactly designed to prevent any major crimes, like murder of theft. However, it can take over small tasks and assist the people in malls and on the streets. With a built-in tablet device, people can complete smart police services through Robocop.

Like the movie version, this Robocop harnesses Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and the latest smart technologies to help police officers identify and catch offenders, as well as broadcast live video feeds.

Dubai Police officials want to replace a quarter of its forces with similar bots by 2030, which means that soon you’ll be seeing more of these robots in Dubai.
