The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has started the development of Pakistan’s first 5G Innovation Lab. The target of the innovation lab is to determine the utility of 5G through a social-economic lens and launch indigenous solutions related to health, education, mobility, and businesses which suit the local environment.
The innovation lab is a research initiative supported by Jazz, Pakistan’s major telecom provider, and Huawei Technologies, with many NUST disciplines participating in determining the impact and usability of 5G communication services in Pakistani society.
By leveraging its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security, the 5G Innovation Lab will help researchers to work on potential use cases for 5G in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Augmented/Virtual Reality and hi, healthcare, Industry 4.0, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector.
The Federal Secretary for Information Technology and Telecom (MoITT), Mohsin Mushtaq, performed the groundbreaking of the 5G Innovation Lab and said,“The lab will play a pivotal role in helping us build an ecosystem to explore 5G-enabled use cases of IT and telecom technologies in various sectors.” The lab will help spearhead the implementation of use cases for co-innovation ecosystem development for 5G.
In his address, the CEO of VEON Group, Kaan Terzioglu, remarked, “While our priority is to provide 4G for all, we must also look at the future of communications where 5G will have an important role to play. Jazz is making a major commitment towards innovation in the country and exploring the potential of 5G to help transform business and society. We set out to empower our customers while enhancing the prosperity of the countries we operate in, and Jazz’s 5G innovation lab aims to deliver both in Pakistan.”
