According to reports, Microsoft has dropped plans for a dual-screen Surface Duo 3, and will instead develop a truly foldable device. According to Windows Central, the next Surface Duo will be more like the Vivo X Fold or Honor Magic Vs, after Microsoft spent a year prototyping and experimenting with its current dual-screen design.

As a first step, Microsoft wanted the Surface Duo 3 to keep the dual-screen design of its predecessors, but it would feature edge-to-edge displays that were narrower and taller, wireless charging, and some other unnamed improvements. When the company miraculously picked a more saner path and went with a truly foldable screen, the design for this device was already finalized.

Because of this change, the end of year shipping goal went out of the window, and now it’s doubtful when the Surface Duo 3 will actually be launched. Similarly, no details about its specs are known at the moment, since it’s apparently too early for that.

Recent reports claimed the Surface Duo 3 would have a 360-degree hinge, but today’s sources claim this isn’t true, and the hinge will be 180 degrees. In this article, we’ve called it the Surface Duo 3 to keep things simple, but if Microsoft wants to emphasize the shift to folding screens even more, it could be called something else.

In addition to revealing all this, the same sources also claim that Microsoft wants to differentiate itself from its competitors more with its Android offerings in the future and is working on delivering “an ecosystem experience” between its Android devices and Windows PCs, similar to what it’s like on the Apple side with iPhones and Macs.

In addition, the company wants to expand its Android smartphone line beyond the Surface Duo and is exploring different form factors to possibly ship in the future – not foldable devices, but slab-style devices.
