Samsung Display exhibited a new prototype display and hinge concept that can fold both inwards and outwards. According to a report in The Verge, Samsung recently showed off this prototype display at CES 2023.
Samsung Display calls it the “Flex in and out” displays can be folded inwards as well as outwards, meaning that the display can open up like a newspaper or fold outwards to wrap around the device, like a book’s hardcover.
A new hinge design allows the device to fold fully instead of leaving a small hole in the crease. The prototype was pictured next to a Galaxy Z Fold smartphone, revealing that it will be as thick as the current foldable smartphone. The panel is able to bend comfortably without stretching thanks to some moving mechanisms.
The dual function fold in and fold out display mainly reduces the need for an external display, which is often used when the device is folded. By folding the device outwards, the internal display can double as an external display, allowing the device to be placed on a surface, like a table, on one side.
Additionally a device of this kind would allow larger batteries and larger camera sensors to be used without adding too much thickness to the phone. Let’s hope it makes it to the market soon.
