Twitter mulls selling usernames through e-auctions

According to a report, Twitter might be introducing an auction for usernames in order to generate revenue. Although it isn’t clear if the auction idea will be implemented, users would be able to bid on usernames or handles. Last month, Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, said Twitter would begin freeing 1.5 billion usernames, as inactive users are removed from Twitter.

Although the platform’s username squatting policy prohibits users from buying and selling usernames, users had found a way around the policy by trading them on the black market. The news report comes right after Telegram announced that it would possibly introduce an auction for usernames on a marketplace called TON blockchain.

Musk has been striving to boost the company’s revenue as soon he assumed ownership of Twitter, trying to bring back advertisers which left the platform. because since the start of Musk’s Twitter ownership, many advertisers left the platform and the company has been cutting down its internal revenue projections.

The company has made some changes over the past few months to increase revenue. Earlier this month, the company said it plans to lift its ban on political ads in the coming weeks.
