WhatsApp introduced disappearing messaging back in 2020, but only for one-on-one chats. However, an expiring group feature has now been spotted in the TestFlight app of WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.5.0.070.
The feature can be found in the group settings and it allows you to select an expiration period – a day, a week, or any other date. While this is located in the group settings,
it only affects your own messages. Therefore, unless other members of the group have also set expiry dates for their posts, they will remain visible in the group.
You can also change your mind at any time – you can cancel the expiration at any time. But even if you forget to do that, WhatsApp will send you a confirmation before actually deleting your messages.
It’s not clear when it will be ready to go live, but the fact that it is in active development is likely to come as welcome news to users with lots of group memberships.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp came out with a new version of their iOS app that has picture-in-picture capability for video calls. As such, people can open another application without ending the call. Most recently, the iPhone app was given the ability to allow users to design their own stickers using photos from their device.
