Taking a proactive step to enhance efficiency and security, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is introducing new standard operating procedures (SOPs) for SIM issuance and activation. Set to become effective from January 24, these changes aim to expedite the process and counter fraudulent practices linked to multiple SIM issuance.
In streamlining the activation process, the PTA now reduces the time for an individual’s second new SIM to seven days, departing from the previous eight hours. It mandates that the first new SIM and duplicate SIM card or number must undergo swift activation within eight hours, as per the latest directives.
Starting January 24, the updated SOPs for SIMs will be universally applicable, covering all operators, customer service centers, franchisees, and retailers. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will seamlessly integrate these SOPs into its system for a cohesive approach.
The decision to implement these changes arises from the necessity to curtail the issuance of multiple SIMs to a single user within a day. The PTA attributes this need to the misuse of fake thumb impressions leading to the issuance of multiple SIMs in a day.
Addressing Fraud through SOPs:
To effectively counter fraudsters exploiting WhatsApp by using SIMs issued in someone else’s name, the new SOPs have been meticulously designed. PTA officials express optimism that these measures, with enhanced transparency, will significantly reduce cases of forgery and fraud.
