Instagram has expanded its Notes feature to include grid posts and Reels, cluttering feeds once again with floating bubbles of additional content. This update allows users to overlay Notes on videos and photos, which automatically disappear in three days unless deleted.
Initially introduced in 2022, Instagram’s Notes were intended to foster deeper interactions beyond posts and stories, resembling old-school AIM away messages and Myspace notes. Positioned above comment sections, these Notes can be customized to specify their audience, such as close friends or mutual followers, making them ideal for sharing inside jokes or personal thoughts discreetly.
However, there are concerns. The Verge reported that others can post Notes on your content without your knowledge, potentially sparking discussions or tagging friends. This feature has sparked mixed reactions, with some expressing worries about nonconsensual interactions, including the accidental surfacing of inappropriate Reels due to algorithmic boosts for posts with Notes.
To use Notes on Reels:
- Click on the airplane icon located at the bottom left corner of the post.
- Tap “Add Note” at the bottom left corner.
- Type your Note and manage audience preferences by selecting the dropdown arrow next to “Share with.”
- Hit share to post your Note along with your Reel.
Instagram continues to evolve Notes, recently adding music features and the ability to reply to Notes with follower prompts, aiming to increase user engagement with this feature. However, the shift towards highly incentivized private interactions has raised concerns about potential online harassment and cyberbullying, highlighting the need for careful use and moderation.
