Netflix has announced plans to discontinue its Basic plan in the United States and France, transitioning users to either the more expensive Standard plan or a new, cheaper ad-supported tier.
The decision was disclosed in the Q2 financial report, following initial testing in the United Kingdom and Canada. Users in these regions had already noted the changes, which have now been confirmed.
Previously priced at $11.99 in the US, the Basic plan has been removed for new subscribers, with existing customers retaining their current plan option. Moving forward, Netflix is directing users towards a new pricing structure, with the ad-supported tier priced at $6.99 as the most economical option. The ad-free Standard plan is now available at $15.49, while the Premium plan, offering additional features like 4K streaming and support for more devices, is priced at $22.99.
In addition to these pricing adjustments, Netflix announced two other significant changes in its quarterly report: the introduction of ads on the Pause screen for ad-supported tiers only, and a shift in its success metrics from new subscriber growth to regional revenue expansion.
