WhatsApp has quietly added the long awaited “tagging” feature for group chats in the latest build of its mobile messaging application.
Now in a group conversation, participants can tag each other by adding “@” symbol in front of their names or numbers. When someone is tagged he/she will get a notification regardless what the group notifications settings are.

So that means if you have already muted a group and someone tags you there, you will still get a notification and right now there is no way you can stop it from beeping. It could be a good way to keep conversations alive, but for some its just another nuisance.

This feature works on latest version of Android & iOS apps

This new features comes with update 2.16.272 for Android and iOS devices, so if you like this feature make sure to update you app and if you don’t like it keep your current version as long as possible.

WhatsApp has also recently introduced features like quoting a message and the ability to send GIFs in chats. However the GIF feature isn’t available for Android users yet.
