Asus might not be the most famous smartphone brand out there, yet it became the first company to announce a smartphone that packs 8GB of RAM.

Unveiled at CES 2017 in Vegas, the Asus ZenFone AR is world’s first smartphone that packs a whopping 8GB of RAM and to support Project Tango AR and Daydream VR. Which to be honest seems like an overkill, since most Android phones work just fine with 4GB of RAM.

ZenFone AR at a Glance:

This Android Nougat powered phone packs a 5.7-inch WQHD Super AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass 4, a Snapdragon 821 chipset along with a choice of having 6GB or 8GB of RAM.

It has UFS 2.0 storage ranging from 32GB to 256GB with microSD support and dual-SIM  card support.

In terms of communications it supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, USB-C support and there is a 3,300 mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 to power it all.

Augmented Reality is the Highlight:

The Asus Zenfone AR is one of the first phones to support Google’s Project Tango – which makes it possible to create indoor, 3D maps. Tango is a new augmented reality (AR) technology that changes the way you interact with the world and with Daydream, you can experience high-quality, immersive virtual reality (VR) with your phone.

For this very reason, Zenfone AR has four cameras on board, three “tango” cameras on the back and one 8-Megapixel sensor on the front for selfies.

There is a 23-megapixel main rear camera with dual-tone LED flash, f/2.0 4-axis optical image stabilization, a motion-tracking camera, and depth-sensing sensor. This allows the phone to not only track the motion of objects, but also learn an area and have an accurate perception of depth.

With Tango, you can measure your surroundings with 3D tools, then re-imagine them with virtual furniture, appliances, clothing and more.

Right now there are very few applications available for AR experience, however with new phone launching in 2017, it is expected that the app developers will shift focus towards it.

Regarding Asus Zenfone AR, there is no information available about the pricing and availability yet. We will update this article once we get to know these.
