While the wrist watches have gone beyond timekeeping a long time ago, smartwatches are relatively a new creation. There are many players in the wearable market due to enormous hype surrounding the wearable technology.

However, there are those who think that smartwatches are not going to last very long and of them is Eric Xu Zhijun, Huawei’s rotating CEO.

His views are quite paradoxical, since Huawei has recently launched its second smartwatch at the MWC in Barcelona along with P10 smartphone.

However, Mr. Xu says that he doesn’t understand the purpose of smartwatches. While talking to media at Huawei’s Analyst Summit in Shenzhen he told that he is not keen of smartwatches and have no optimism about this market.

I am always confused as to what smartwatches are for when we have smartphone.

He further said that when the smartwatch team in Huawei presents their ideas to him with great excitement. He always reminds them to consider whether there are tangible needs for these products in the market.

Does Smartwatches have any future?

According to most data sources, Apple and Samsung are dominating the wearables market at this moment. Huawei is also keen to join there league – the latest version, Huawei Watch 2, was released a month. It runs on the latest Android 2.0 and comes with a SIM card slot to make or receive calls.

Experts believe that smartwatches are not a game-changer product, however with more and more smartwatches pouring in the market – eventually people will want them.
