Instagram’s newest app, Threads, has taken the world by storm, amassing an astounding 100 million users in record time. Threads quickly gained popularity right from the start. Within the first two hours, it attracted a staggering 2 million users, and the numbers steadily climbed to 5 million, 10 million, 30 million, and eventually reached a staggering 70 million last week.

On Monday, Zuckerberg said in a Threads post confirming the milestone that the growth was “mostly organic”. Instagram head Adam Mosseri also posted about it, likewise noting that it took just five days to get there.

Users aren’t just joining Threads; they are actively engaging with the app. There have already been over 95 million posts and 190 million likes shared on the platform. The level of user activity and engagement on Threads is truly impressive.

However, it is important to note that Threads is still in its early stages, and it remains to be seen if it will achieve the same level of cultural significance as Twitter once did. According to Adam Mosseri, Meta is not specifically aiming to replace Twitter. The company does not intend to actively promote political and hard news content on the platform. Nevertheless, Threads has the potential to become a preferred destination for conversation-oriented social media. While Meta is extremely excited about the successful launch week, Mosseri acknowledges that it is too early to determine its long-term appeal and user retention.
