The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released its annual report for 2023-24, showcasing key milestones in the telecom industry.
Telecom revenues reached an all-time high of Rs955 billion for FY 2023-24, with the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) at Rs302 per month for the period of April to June 2024. A new streamlined one-window system for IP address and VPN registration is making life easier for IT firms and call centers.
Broadband subscribers jumped from 127.6 million in June 2023 to 142.3 million by September 2024. Internet speeds saw a 28% increase, rising from 15.65 Mbps to 20.02 Mbps. The report indicates that 91% cellular coverage has been achieved, with telecom services now available throughout Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), even in remote and mountainous regions.
Under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 1.43 million illegal URLs were blocked to create a safer online space. The PTA successfully addressed 99.3% of 191,514 consumer complaints, enhancing the quality of telecom services. Additionally, 5.8 million inactive SIMs were deactivated to keep user data clean.
Pakistan’s ranking in the Global Cybersecurity Index has soared into the Top 40, reflecting advancements in digital security. The Telecom Equipment Standards Regulations 2024 are set to ensure the quality and safety of communication products.
While urban areas are ready for 5G, rural regions struggle with high costs and logistical challenges. The lack of affordable 5G devices also slows down adoption.
The PTA’s report for 2023-24 highlights notable advancements while also tackling the hurdles in achieving nationwide 5G coverage and fair digital access. The telecom sector in Pakistan is on the rise, boosting connectivity, investments, and economic growth.
