OPPO wants to have their own SoC (system-on-a-chip) to maintain its competitive edge. An insider report revealed that the Chinese smartphone maker has already “taped out” their chip, and it will hit the market next year.

It merits mentioning here that OPPO already has its own NPU (Marisilicon X) and a connectivity chipset (Marisilicon Y). However, the brand lacked a genuine SoC (system-on-a-chip). Which is about to change as we are hearing that OPPO’s self-developed 4nm mobile phone processor has been taped out, and a 5G SOC will be available in 2024.

In electronics design, the phrase “taping out” denotes that the integrated circuit design process is finished and the device is prepared to be manufactured.

According to previous reports, OPPO invested more than CNY 10 billion (approximately $1.4 billion) in establishing IC design centres across China, including Beijing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai.

Experts predicted that OPPO’s self-developed processor would begin mass production in the second half of 2023, with the final product arriving in 2024. OPPO, on the other hand, appears to be much faster than our predictions. It’s also possible that we’ll see OPPO’s first smartphone with its own chipset in the second half of this year or the following year.
